Three council seats were up for grabs in the City of Greenfield on Nov. 5, with districts 2 and 4 having district elections for the first time since the city began its transition away from at-large to district-based elections in 2022. The council will have two new representatives for Districts 1 and 2.
The District 2 race was unopposed. Marcy Jones, who works as a human resources manager, received 302 votes.
Incumbent Councilmember Ariana Rodriguez leads in District 4 with 60 percent of the vote, or 225, votes against challenger Cynthia Zavala who has 40 percent of the vote, or 148 votes, as of the latest count on Nov. 6.
Rodriguez was appointed in February 2023 to serve for the reminder of Mayor Robert White's term. (White ran successfully for mayor in 2022, vacating his at-large city council seat midterm.)
District 1, which is midterm, had two candidates running for a partial, two-year term for a vacant seat. Belen Garcia, a retired educator, leads with 55 percent of the vote, or 199 votes, over Stephanie Garcia, a litigation paralegal who has long been engaged in city issues, with 45 percent of the vote or 166 votes, as of the latest vote count, updated by the Monterey County Elections Department on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
District 1 has been through turmoil and face multiple vacancies in the past two years since the last election. Most recently, Drew Tipton resigned in October following a court decision finding that the City Council had violated the Brown Act in appointing him. His appointment came after two previous councilmembers—including Tipton's opponent, who won in the 2022 election—resigned after moving out the district.
Current Councilmember Yanely Martinez was elected at-large in 2020, and will be off the council at the end of this year when her term comes to an end. She lives in District 1, but did not throw her hat in the ring to run for the district seat.
