About the Weekly

The mission of Monterey County Now and Monterey County Weekly is to inspire independent thinking and conscious action, etc.

As the largest-circulation newspaper in one of the most spectacular counties in America, Monterey County Weekly has long been recognized for its thoughtful, provocative and engaging coverage of news, arts and entertainment. Founded in 1988, the newspaper has received scores of California and national newspaper awards since its inception. Good journalism has proved to be good for business too, as Monterey County Weekly today out-circulates the national-owned daily papers in the market, and our digital products, called Monterey County Now, share the latest news daily.

Every Thursday, the print edition of Monterey County Weekly delivers insight to our readers and offers advertisers access to the most highly sought-after demographic in the market. We have become a media organization built for the 21st century. In addition to our weekly print newspaper, we also publish a daily email newsletter and local news, entertainment and events daily on our website, Monterey County Now.

By almost any measure, Monterey County is an incredibly desirable market. The circulation area of the print edition includes Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina, Moss Landing, Prunedale, Salinas and the expansive Salinas Valley. With the largest industry (agriculture) feeding the world and the second-largest industry (hospitality) drawing visitors from around the world, Monterey County has an outsized global presence. Marine research, the evolving Fort Ord National Monument, expanding tech sector and regional influences from Silicon Valley all make this a fascinating community to live and work in, and to report on.

For years, our unofficial focus has been on a triple-bottom line: People, planet and profits.

That is reflected through Monterey County Gives!, a partnership between Monterey County Weekly, the Community Foundation for Monterey County and the Monterey Peninsula Foundation that solicits donations from readers and raises money for local nonprofits at year-end. Since 2009, Monterey County Gives! has raised and donated over $67 millions. (Read more and donate starting every November at www.montereycountygives.com.)

It also includes investment into our building infrastructure. We were the first newspaper in the country to have 100 percent of our electricity generated from solar energy (2007) and the first existing building in the tri-county area to obtain the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Platinum certification (2013). We've got solar panels on the roof of our Seaside headquarters. (Check out the carbon offset on our Sunny Portal.)

More than a third of our staff have worked at the Monterey County Weekly for more than 15 years. Our employee benefit package includes both a 401(k) match and profit sharing. We provide seasonal deliveries of local, organic produce and memberships at a local fitness center.

The business model remains: Good journalism is good business.

What's next? We'll do our best to live our mission every day, to continue to inspire independent thinking and conscious action, etc.
