Monterey County Sheriff's Office searching for suspects allegedly tied to abandoned newborn found dead.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on Monday, Aug. 31, regarding the newborn child who was found dead along Struve Road in North Monterey County on Aug. 1.

After receiving a report that a baby had been found alongside the roadway at approximately 8:30am on Aug. 1, fire personnel, emergency medical services and Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 100 block of Struve Road. At the scene, fire personnel confirmed that the infant was deceased.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office found evidence that a juvenile had birthed the infant along the road and placed her on the ground before leaving the newborn at the scene. According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, a post-mortem forensic examination indicated that the female infant had signs of traumatic injury.

Through its investigation, the Sheriff’s Office found probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for a 14-year-old female resident of the Castroville/Salinas area, who is being charged with murder. An arrest warrant was also issued for Sergio Galvez Perez, a 38-year-old male resident of Castroville/Salinas who is being charged with incest, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment and child endangerment.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Castroville/Salinas resident Ofelia Garcia Ortega, mother of the 14-year-old, with the charge of child endangerment. Ortega was booked into Monterey County Jail and later posted bail and was released.

Sheriff’s Office detectives believe that Perez is hiding the 14-year-old. The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who observes Perez to contact law enforcement and not to approach or confront him.
