A 19-year-old Seaside man is dead after he was shot in the head on Highway 1 early Sunday morning.
According to police, between 2am and 3am, Khaleel Johnson and a man in his early 20s were in a light-colored Nissan sedan driving north on Highway 1 near the Fremont Street exit. People in a nearby car started shooting, hitting the two men.
Sand City Police Chief Michael Klein says Johnson died at the scene and the other man was taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.
No information is known about the suspect vehicle or the suspects.
Klein says his office is investigating the shooting as gang-related and the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Task Force is assisting in the investigation.
The murder follows a shooting homicide on Del Monte Beach in Monterey early Saturday morning.
Later on Sunday, a 22-year-old man was shot in the face in rural, north Salinas.
According to a press release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, just after 4:30pm, deputies responded to Crazy Horse Canyon Road and Old Stage Road where they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to a local hospital. His name is not being released and no immediate update about his condition was available.
