Perhaps a local sports desk – KSBW or KION, maybe – should cover wine scores: “In Pinot Noir today, Jackson Estate held off Toulouse, 92-88. And over in the Central Coast it was Albatross Ridge edging Chamisal, 95-94.”
The 95 handed to Albatross Ridge for their 2014 Estate Reserve Pinot Noir by Wine Enthusiast is confirmation of a remarkable bottle. But really, a swirl and sip is all you need to vouch for its qualities. It bounds from the glass, spilling aromas of ripe plums and dark berries that tumble around with infectious glee. It’s clearly a vibrant wine, but the bouquet also includes hints of crushed mulberry, split wood and black earth resting under prairie grasses. On the palate, vivid fruits again leap forward, twirling with abandon until called to settle down mid-palate. Subtle notes of cedar and fennel seed, birch and ground coffee give the wine an old cabin in the woodsy background, brightening again on the finish.
Sorry TV guys, the 2014 Albatross Ridge is a wine to watch… or better yet, to drink.
