Two former employees of the International School of Monterey have been accused of embezzling a combined total of nearly $300,000 from the school, according to Seaside Police.
The department arrested 45-year-old Rosa Segura, the chief financial officer of the school, on Oct. 22 for allegedly embezzling $238,000 from the school to pay for luxury vacations, shopping, restaurants and spas.
The investigation into Segura was sparked after Seaside Police’s investigation into 42-year-old Terry Bumper, the former food services director. Police alleged Bumper ordered food products for his personal catering business by embezzling $58,800.
Police arrested Bumper on Sept. 24, and the district attorney’s office filed charges against him Oct. 20.
Segura has not yet been formally charged by the Monterey County District Attorney’s office. Cmndr. Matthew Doza from the Seaside Police Department notes that there is still a pending search warrant for Segura, and the investigation is ongoing.
As of this point in the investigation, Doza says they do not believe Segura and Bumper were working together. Bumper denies the allegations and says he was not working with Segura.
The investigation was triggered after the International School of Monterey, which is located in Seaside, reported possible embezzlement to the police Aug. 12, according to a statement from the Seaside Police Department. The International School of Monterey did not reply to a request for comment.
Bumper pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. He posted $20,000 in bail and plans to fight out the case in court, he says.
"I have no support right now," Bumper says. "Nobody believes me."
He says that all he did was order food for the school, which had to be signed off and approved by another person. He denies transferring money to his personal business, a catering company that closed around the same time he was arrested.
Segura was his coworker, he says, and had the final say on orders. Segura did not reply to a request for comment.
“I did everything I could for them kids, and I would never steal from them kids,” Bumper says. “I did my best.”
