As air tankers and helicopters flew up high, dropping bright red retardant over the growing Soberanes fire, tourists and hikers made their way out of Garrapata State Park Friday afternoon while turning to watch a giant, dark gray plume of smoke.
According to Cal Fire officials, the blaze started just before 9am and within hours, it gradually increased in size. Winds in the early afternoon pushed the growth south from the valley where crews were having difficulty dousing the flames due to the steep terrain.
