Update: National Weather Service forecasters say Monterey Bay received "exceptionally minimal ripples" as a result of a tsunami prompted by a powerful earthquake in Chile. The ripples were measured in inches.
A tsunami advisory was issued for the Big Sur coastal area after an 8.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Chile on Wednesday.
The tsunami warning stretches from Ragged Point in Big Sur to San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center. The advisory was issued about 7pm, approximately three hours after Chile was rattled by the deadly earthquake.
"A widespread inundation of land is not expected for advisory areas," according to the NTWC website.
Strong currents and waves in Ragged Point in Big Sur could start about 5am on Thursday. The tsunami's height is not expected to surpass 1 foot, and currents could be hazardous for several hours.
Recommendations for those in the advisory areas:
- Move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas.
- Do not go to the coast to observe the tsunami
