The proposed date for full containment of the 129,395-acre Soberanes Fire burning in the Los Padres National Forest has been delayed for two weeks until mid-October.
According to Soberanes Fire spokesperson Victor Gutierrez, fire crews have contained the slow-moving fire to 92 percent as of Thursday morning. Gutierrez says the delay is mostly due to weather.
“The fire crews’ initial plan was for larger areas to be back burned, but weather conditions didn’t allow that to continue,” he says.
Instead, fire officials are taking a more direct approach to create containment lines by using hand crews to cut fire breaks near the active part of the fire on Church Ranch and Church Creek on Tassajara Road.
“Even though it’s contained, it’s not controlled,” he says. “The steep terrain continues to be a problem, but we have cooler temperatures on our side.”
According to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service, interior sections of the fire will continue to burn even after full containment due to extremely dry conditions from the prolonged drought.
