Former CIA head Leon Panetta elected to Oracle's Board of Directors.

Before stints in some of the country's most powerful positions, Leon Panetta represented California’s 16th district in U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993.

He's been the White House chief of staff, the U.S. defense secretary and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Now, Monterey County native Leon Panetta is making a major play in the private sector: In a statement released today, the tech giant Oracle announced Panetta has been unanimously elected to serve on the company's board of directors.

“Secretary Panetta is a dynamic leader with a distinguished record of public service at the highest levels of government," Dr. Michael Boskin, chair of the nomination committee, said in the statement. "He will add deep expertise and brings a fresh perspective to our board.”

Oracle is not the first board Panetta has served on, but it's by far the most powerful: He is currently a director at IDT Telecom, Inc., and in the past, has been a director at Zenith National Insurance Corp., NYSE Euronext, Inc., Monterey Bay Aquarium and several other private companies and nonprofits.

Panetta, who has undergraduate and law degrees from Santa Clara University, is a Distinguished Scholar to the Chancellor of the CSU system, and in 1997, co-founded the Panetta Institute for Public Policy with his wife Sylvia, which is based at CSU Monterey Bay.
