On Friday morning, a construction crew was doing flood control on Rio Road with a small dozer and when it moved some dirt in the plot a badly decomposed body was unearthed.
At this time, it is difficult to identify the person due to the body's condition, according to Monterey County Sheriff's Detective Bryan Hoskins. The gender has also not yet been determined, but it has been transported to the Coroner's Office where an autopsy and medical examination will be conducted.
"There are signs that the body has been here for a while," Hoskins says. "There could be a multitude of reasons why this death occurred."
At this point though, Hoskins says the death is considered suspicious, even though there is no evidence of foul play. The hillside where the body was found, neighboring the Chevron and Carmel Mission Inn, is a common spot for the transient population, Hoskins added.
Construction workers reported the body at 10:51am on Friday and by 3pm, investigators continued to sift through the dirt looking for any time of evidence that could help them determine anything about the death of this person.
