Cal Fire battles fire at Garrapata State Park.

2:30pm UPDATE: Cal Fire officials say the fire has grown to 153 acres. Highway 1 remains open and there have been no evacuations ordered.

Garrapata State Park, about seven miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, is closed Friday due to a fire.

As of 2pm, the vegetation fire had burned 153 acres of redwood trees and brush in a canyon tucked inside the state park, Cal Fire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn says. The fire has been fueled by dry grass up the slope.

"The biggest concern now is the wind," Pangburn says. "It's starting to align with the slope and some dry vegetation."

The Soberanes Fire was first reported at about 8:30am Friday and has gradually increased in size. Friday afternoon, a cloud of smoke surrounded the tops of some of the mountains in the area.

State Park Superintendent James Bilz says Garrapata State Park will likely be closed for the remainder of the day, and possibly for a portion of the weekend.

“We will follow Cal Fire’s instructions,” Bilz says.

The fire began at 5 acres and continues to grow. Pangburn says it is at 0-percent containment.

"I don't know how long it is going to take [to contain it], but I know for sure it is not going to be today," Pangburn says.

Although there have been no injuries reported, the fire is in a tricky spot for firefighters to access, burning deep in a canyon about 10 miles into a trail. 

Cal Fire has assigned 150 firefighters to battle the flames, including a couple of air tankers. They are dipping into the ocean for water supply.

Bilz urges drivers along Highway 1 to drive carefully through the area as fire crews park trucks and station themselves along the roadside.
