A little rain didn't dampen the vibes at opening day of Cali Roots.

Let’s talk about that weather. It wasn't ideal during opening day of Cali Roots on Friday, May 24, but it didn't deter any of the many festival-goers. 

Spirits were high, and the vibes were higher. Two ladies from Santa Cruz said they were still excited despite the Monterey Peninsula’s infamous overcast clouds. Toward the end of E-40’s and Too Short’s performance, it had started to rain. Nevertheless, the show went on and people still gathered at the Cali Roots stage to see Stick Figure.

Now, let’s talk about that tag-team performance of E-40 and Too Short! They covered an array of their humble beginnings, to Bay Area bops, hyphy staples and more recent releases from the past couple of years. Multiple generations of people resonated with some songs over others, which speaks of the influence and relevance Bay Area rap and hip-hop has had over the years.

It made for a great retrospective of how a musician's career can evolve, but still stick to its “roots,” so to speak.
