Quick Bites: Big seafood breakthrough, new sandwich spot and a new deli.

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula has long been a pioneer of healthier hospital food, and not just because its acronym (and common name) is CHOMP.

Now it's making another major—and historic—step in forming the first formal partnership any hospital ever has with Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. 

Steven Packer, MD and president/CEO of Community, reports seafood has been a menu choice daily for the 1,800 meals to go to patients, staff and visitors.

Now those dishes will better, as he says, "reflect a commitment to [eaters'] health and the health of the world’s oceans.”

• Crazys Sandwich House (383-1554) opened today (Tuesday, May 31) in the former Marina Mundo's on Del Monte in Marina.

• A much-needed deli is open at 601 Broadway St. in King City (210-3100): Justin Logan worked with trailblazing South County tastemaker Travis Childers of Cork & Plough (386-9491), which has been supporting him fully as he gives the City of King another something savory it was lacking. Cali's Finest (210-3100) does sandwiches like the roast turkey-bacon-ciabatta Lockwood ($7), burgers like the chili-pickle San Hose ($8), Roy's Swiss sausages ($8), sides like Moody's pasta salad ($3) and soups like Grandpa's King City pink bean ($5). Salads like the watermelon-feta ($5) too. Grand opening party hits Thursday, June 2.

• Restaurant 1833 (643-1833) has debuted an impressive new cocktail menu (get more on the blog) and does a Five Marys Farm dinner Saturday, May 28, on the redwood deck featuring Five Marys whole animal roasts (a Chef Jason Franey specialty), endless sides and Ben Spungin-styled dessert.
