Sometimes, when life gives you lemons, you make Hollandaise sauce.
That goes onto the fried chicken-grilled ham Brophy's Benedict ($12), one of a number of captivating and gut-busting dishes at Mulligan Public House.
That plate also evokes the history of Mulligan, and a major low point for its team.
Last year Erin Reimer and the tight-knit crew at Brophy's Pub found out Dolphin Inn, which is attached to the bar-and-grill, was being sold.
The new owners wanted to take over the bar too.
"We were so sad," Reimer says.
Flash forward less than a year—and countless visits to the city permitting offices—and it's hard to imagine her happier that it happened.
Here's why: Le St. Tropez had to surrender its central Dolores Street location, where it sits among one of the better restaurant clusters on the Central Coast.
Reimer et al negotiated a lease.
Virtually her entire staff returns, a minor miracle and a testament to their staff chemistry.
They have 1,600 square feet instead of 1,100.
Instead of five TVs previously, they have seven.
There's a sizable patio that will eventually have its own outdoor bar.
They got to customize the layout, starring slick retro lighting fixtures, shiny tap system and a beautiful polished wood bar that looks like it could accommodate an entire football team.
At the moment they're wrapping up final details for a tentative Nov. 30 launch.
"Everything happens for a reason," Reimer says.
That reason just might be the bacon-and-beer flight.
Or the breakfast sliders.
Or the chicken and waffles.
Whatever the case, locals have been pounding down the door for updates and remain crazy eager for the eventual opening.
