An alleged rape in Fort Ord military housing takes a sergeant to trial.

It happened in the middle of the night last August, in the living room of their house in Fort Ord military housing. He was sick in bed and his wife was in the living room.

She was face down on the couch and snoring when her husband, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard who the Weekly will not identify to protect his wife’s identity, left his bed to check on her. He noticed her body moving.

“But she wasn’t moving it,” he testified in a military Article 32 proceeding in February. “That’s when I noticed him on top of her.”

The husband is referring to U.S. Army Sgt. CG Conerly, a current student at the Defense Language Institute, who has since been charged with sexually assaulting the woman. According to military court testimony, Conerly initially tried to run away from the husband, but the husband restrained him and called police.

Conerly was never arrested or booked in jail. He is out of custody under military supervision, but not confined at home or at a military base.

When charges were recommended against him, the crime was also not made public.

The alleged victim in the case was intoxicated and impaired, her husband testified, and she does not have much recollection of the events. According to court testimony from Conerly’s friends, she was “fishing for compliments” earlier that night when they were all hanging out in the neighborhood.

“Based on the evidence, [Jane Doe] is either lying about what happened or blacked out and engaged in drunken sex,” attorney and Army Capt. Jodie Grimm, who represents Conerly, said in court. “Her motive is to fabricate this story because she was caught cheating.”

Evidence in the Article 32 proceeding, equivalent to a grand jury proceeding, helped determine the case should go to a court-martial on May 10. If found guilty, Conerly could face 30 years in prison.

All parties involved in the case declined to comment.
