As usual, the annual Monterey Jazz Festival had something for everyone and in their 58th year, the historic event did not disappoint.
For fans of a classic big band twist with a modern sound, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue delivered on Saturday afternoon in the Jimmy Lyons Arena.
Listeners who are fans of 60s-era hard bop and progressive jazz were able to see the Chick Corea Trio with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade, who was written about in last week’s Weekly.
Before Corea’s set, three pianists—led by Geri Hall, featuring Jason Moran and Christian Sands—played the classic music of Erroll Garner’s locally-recorded live show of The Concert By The Sea.
In the more intimate venues the Nightclub and the Coffeehouse Gallery, smaller combos and trios unloaded an arrays of sounds with the Monte Alexander Trio, using the same personnel lineup for the last 40 years and Dann Zinn, who brought in legendary drummer Peter Erskine for his sax, electric guitar and percussion project.
