In continued efforts to keep the Soberanes Fire from heading further into Big Sur, U.S. Forest Service Hotshot firemen torched the east side of Old Coast Road today, a controlled burn intended to remove the dry vegetation that could further fuel the fire, leaving behind a bare patch and creating a fire break.
Cal Fire and prison inmate crews helped monitor the burn, which pushed thick smoke westward as heavy winds picked up.
As of Monday night at 7pm, the fire has burned over 60,000 acres and is 45 percent contained.
