web photo 6/4 - living well

North County resident Vincent Ferrante serves his community by juggling his role as an elected official with several volunteer jobs.

Pam Marino here, proud to announce that our annual free magazine for seniors and people living with disabilities, Living Well, is out now and well worth checking out. It’s chock-full of information about the vast number of resources, assistance and programs available throughout Monterey County.

The magazine is produced in partnership with the County of Monterey Area Agency on Aging and is published in both English and Spanish. AAA vets the information inside, and the Weekly staff contributes inspirational stories of local people who are examples of living well, along with photos, relevant ads and design.

This year there are more than 100 pages of information, ranging from emergency numbers to employment services, housing resources, plus where to find food and help with nutrition, health care and counseling, residential and nursing care listings, pet care resources and where to find fun and educational activities.

The people we feature this year are truly amazing, each in their own way. On the cover is Vincent Ferrante of North Monterey County, who is busier than most people still in the midst of their careers. I interviewed Ferrante to chronicle his busy schedule after retiring three times. He’s still serving as an elected official on the Moss Landing Harbor District Board and is active statewide with the California Special Districts Association plus several volunteer jobs with Salinas Valley Health and more.

Also featured this year is retired school teacher Debby Norman of King City who is practicing yoga and tai chi to keep herself moving and contributing to the community, Staff Writer Celia Jiménez reports. Staff Writer Aric Sleeper writes how George Niesen of Salinas strives to give back and practice kindness through multiple efforts. Also featured is Tonia Eaton, whose name you might recognize from the Weekly’s pages—Eaton is a frequent contributor writing about music and other topics, all while getting around in her wheelchair, as Editor Sara Rubin shares. Staff Writer Agata Popęda illuminates Carmel resident Lorraine Yglesias, who eschews the term “retiring,” thinking it of “rewiring” instead.

So take a look and discover what resources are available to help enrich and improve life here in Monterey County for older adults and people living with a disability. Copies of Living Well are available at the AAA office, 730 La Guardia St., Salinas, and at most local senior-serving nonprofits, community centers and care centers. You can also pick up a copy at the Weekly offices, 668 Williams Ave., Seaside, or read it online.
