It was bad timing for the developer who tried to convince the County Board of Supervisors to approve a water-intensive subdivision yesterday. (See tomorrow's paper for more on that.)
The mercury hit 96 degrees in Salinas, according to Weather Underground, beating the previous May 13 record high of 85 degrees (in 2008).
Supervisor Lou Calcagno took the heat in context, noting the developer was asking for water on the hottest day of the year, at the beginning of the dry season, during one of the most severe droughts California’s ever seen.
“You add up all the dots, they don’t come together," Calcagno said.
Today is a record-breaker, too: Weather Underground is again showing 96 at the Salinas Airport. At the Monterey Airport, yesterday's 92 degrees beat the 1997 record of 77, and today's 85 is on pace to break the 2008 record of 80 degrees.
The beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove was unusually full of sunbathers and wave-dippers this afternoon, even though it's a weekday and school is in session.
Records highs are also making history in San Francisco, Oakland and Mountainview, according to the National Weather Service.
(Temperatures reported by NWS are a couple degrees lower than those reported by Weather Underground, but still showing record highs.)
