In less than two weeks, the Chimney Fire, which started in San Luis Obispo County Aug. 13, has grown to almost half the size of the Soberanes Fire and started to threaten more homes as it burns further north in Monterey County.
The blaze began on Chimney Rock Road south of Lake Nacimiento and has grown to 45,008 acres as of Aug. 26, destroying 49 homes. The Soberanes Fire, by contrast, has been burning since July 22 and has charred 91,100 acres, destroying 57 homes.
On Thursday, Aug. 25. fire crews spread out in the Bryson Hesperia community west of Lake San Antonio to monitor hot spots and spot fires, which picked up with late afternoon winds near Sapaque Valley Road threatening many ranch-style homesteads in the area.
The Chimney Fire is now at 47-percent containment.
