The confirmed number of structures burned in the Pfeiffer Fire was revised upward today, to 34 residences and 4 outbuildings, according to an update sent out by the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire—which ultimately consumed 917 acres—remains 100 percent contained, and firefighters will remain in the area to patrol and control the small amount of fire activity within the perimeter.
The firefighting force in Big Sur has shrunk to 200 personnel, down considerably from the 1000-plus on Friday, and U.S. Forest Service Incident Commander Mark Nunez is passing the reigns to Curt Schwarm, Type 3 Incident Commander of the Los Padres National Forest. The Forest Service also adds that Nunez’ team thanks the residents of Big Sur for their cooperation and patience during the fire.
Residents of Clear Ridge, Middle Ridge, and Front Hill areas were allowed to return to their homes yesterday, but Sycamore Road, Pfeiffer Ridge Road, and the road from River Inn to intersection with Pfeiffer Ridge Road remain closed. Community meetings regarding the fire will resume Monday at 10:30am at Big Sur Station.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
