After three decades working to restore and preserve Central Coast wetlands, Elkhorn Slough Foundation Executive Director Mark Silberstein in getting his proper kudos with a prestigious national award.
The Environmental Law Institute named Silberstein its 2013 Community Wetlands Leader, awarding the honor in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. last week.
"I’ve always viewed Elkhorn Slough as a window on the larger natural world and, through our work here, have learned how critical wetlands are to the functioning of both the natural and the human economy," Silberstein stated in the press release. "To be included with national leaders in wetland conservation and research is very humbling and inspiring for a mud-lover like me.”
Silberstein has led the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, which works to conserve and restore the biologically rich estuarine reserve in Moss Landing, since 1983.
Under Silberstein's leadership, according to the press release, "the foundation has brokered 48 land transactions, protecting nearly 4,000 acres of land, and has restored more than 2,000 acres of coastal and estuarine habitats."
