Students from Alisal Union School District welcomed the 2024-2025 school year with the news that after-school artistic programs are back after they were abruptly cancelled before the end of the previous school year.
In July, AUSD’s board approved a contract with Forxa, which has been working with the district since 2022, to bring back this program this academic year.
The programs were cancelled on May 30 before the end of school year, after Joshua Alfaro, AlisalCAN’s executive director, was charged with child molestation. AlisalCAN was in charge of several after-school programs in the district, including music, color guard, drumline, cheer and mariachi programs.
Parents received registration letters for the Forxa program on Aug. 12 and were notified during the first week of school.
Forxa has provided dance classes at Monte Bella Elementary and its programming expanded during the summer, offering different activities including piñata making, sewing lessons and mosaics.
While the district now has a different contractor for these after-school programs, instruction will be similar; the same instructors that worked under AlisalCAN will return to the classrooms.
So far, there are 315 students enrolled in the after-school program. This includes students enrolled in Folklorico Dance, a program that is directed by Danzantes del Valle, another AUSD contractor.
