A 23-year-old Salinas man was killed on the night of Sunday, Sept. 6, after he was struck by a pickup truck while riding a bicycle on Harrison Road, south of Sala Road, in unincorporated Monterey County, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
According to CHP officers, a 54-year-old man from San Mateo, the only occupant in the vehicle, was driving a GMC pickup truck southbound on Harrison Road.
The bicyclist was also traveling southbound on Harrison Road, ahead of the pickup truck. For reasons that are still under investigation, the bicyclist lost control and fell into the southbound lane. Moments later, the GMC pickup collided with the bicyclist, according to CHP.
The cyclist suffered major injuries due to the crash and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office is expected to release additional information about the victim after his next of kin has been notified.
CHP said the GMC truck driver was determined not to be under the influence at the time of the crash.
The circumstances leading up to the bicyclist losing control remain under investigation.
