A civilian employee working within the Navy base near Naval Postgraduate School was stabbed by an unknown assailant Thursday morning, while he worked on a vehicle at the Navy Exchange Autoport, officials confirmed.
The man suspected in the stabbing has been identified as John Rivera, 28. He was arrested by a Monterey police officer at gunpoint on Encina Avenue nearing M&S Building Supply, while he tried to run away.
The stabbing occurred about 10:15am, Melinda Larson, a spokesman with NPS, said. Larson says she has no information regarding Rivera's motive or how he got into school grounds.
Only authorized users in the military, whether active or retired, can shop at the Autoport where the employee was stabbed, Larson said.
"We are still trying to figure out how he got past the gate," she added.
The victim was initially taken to the Community Hospital in the Monterey Peninsula for treatment, but was then transferred to Natividad Medical Center. Larson says he was treated and released a few hours after the incident.
Rivera was questioned by federal authorities following the stabbing, but as of Friday morning, he was booked into Monterey County Jail. He is facing charged for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Clarification: This article initially said the victim was an employee at Naval Postgraduate School, but he is a Navy base civilian employee employed by the retail auto shop.

How was this sick puppy able to breach the high security fence? NPS now needs to patrol the fence line in order to secure the former bucolic groves of trees surrounding the former Del Monte Hotel...
