About a month before the Life Time Sea Otter Classic made its return for 2025, race director Jeff Frost said the event was well on its way to have its “biggest year ever” in terms of registered athletes.

He was right.

The amateur gravel race on Friday, April 11 saw a record number of participating riders at more than 700, a 35 percent increase over 2024’s numbers, according to event organizers.

Exact numbers overall are not yet available, but organizers estimate roughly 7,000 athletes competed in the four-day event.

“The 2025 Life Time Sea Otter Classic presented by Continental has been one for the ages—our biggest expo yet, record numbers across races and recreational rides, and an atmosphere that truly created a celebration of cycling,” Frank Yohannan, founder and event director of the Sea Otter Classic, said in a press release.

It was a great event for Haley Batten of Utah. After winning the Life Time Grand Prix gravel race on the women’s side on Thursday, April 10, she emerged victorious in the 66-mile Fuego XL cross-country race on Saturday, April 12, and in record time: 4 hours, 33 minutes and 34 seconds, finishing more than 26 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

The next generation of riders also had their share of fun. The Family Zone within the expo grounds had a larger footprint this year, highlighted by an age-appropriate pump track presented by the Monterey Off Road Cycling Association.

A new course debuted this year for the Family Off-Road Tour, a nearly 11-mile loop through Fort Ord National Monument.

"We’ve seen world-class performances from elite racers, and also thousands of cyclists of all ages and backgrounds coming together to ride; from first-time kids racing in the Family Zone to seasoned vets in the Life Time Grand Prix,” Yohannan said.
