A woman was killed and three others seriously injured Tuesday night in a suspected drunk driving crash on San Miguel Canyon Road near Prunedale, the California Highway Patrol reported.
One of the injured was Freedom resident Bryan O. Garcia, 20, who was subsequently arrested by the CHP on two charges, felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
An unidentified woman sitting in the front passenger seat next to Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. An unidentified man sitting in the back suffered major trauma to his face and lower body.
The driver of a second car, Elizabeth Gutierrez, 20, of El Cajon, sustained blunt force trauma injuries to her face, head and legs, after Garcia’s car collided head on with hers.
Garcia suffered broken legs and blunt force trauma to his face. He was transported to Natividad Medical Center along with the male passenger in his car and Gutierrez.
According to a CHP report, Garcia was driving a blue 2010 Honda Accord southbound on San Miguel Canyon Road approaching Hambey Lane at approximately 11:20pm, when he crossed double yellow lines to pass a car in front of him. He collided head on with Gutierrez’s 2001 Nissan Sentra.
After the two cars collided, Garcia’s Honda continued south and overturned where it came to a rest on its roof, trapping Garcia and the two passengers inside.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The cause is still under investigation, says Oscar Loza, CHP spokesperson.
