The County of Monterey Government Center in Salinas, the main building where a lot of the County's business takes place, is shut down, after a malfunctioning sewer line forced its closure, officials announced on Tuesday, Sept. 8. It will remain shut through the week as cleanup and remediation efforts continue.
The offices at 168 W. Alisal St. most impacted include the Assessor/Clerk-Recorder, Treasurer-Tax Collector, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, Public Defender's Office and the Supervisor District 2 Office.
According to the announcement, officials are working to establish satellite service locations for the most impacted public-facing offices.
"The County's goal is to provide services to the public as efficiently and seamlessly as possible while remediation work continues at the Government Center," the announcement read.
A Monterey County Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, was cancelled, with a stacked agenda that included such issues as a rooster ordinance and cannabis lounges. Those items will be heard at the next regular meeting on Sept. 30.
Employees of other departments housed in the building are working remotely. Supervisors of District 3 and 5 are working from their community-based offices, in King City and Monterey, respectively.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, Sept. 9, County officials announced that the Treasurer-Tax Collector will have a team in the West Wing at 142 W. Alisal St., within the District Attorney's Office.
The Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and the Assessor-Clerk-Recorder's Office will have a team in Conference Room E-118 next to Rep. Zoe Lofgren's office in the East Wing at 142 W. Alisal St.
The Public Defender's Office, Auditor Controller, Human Resources, County Counsel and the County Administrative Office are working remotely.
Supervisor Luis Alejo's office is working remotely. Supervisor Glenn Church's office is working at the Castroville office, 11140 Speegle St. Supervisor Chris Lopez's office is working at the King City office at 1011 Broadway St., Suite C.
The Government Center will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 11.
