It's a raw deal for beachgoers trying to enjoy the summer.
Sewage spewed into Monterey Bay at MacAbee Beach, near the intersection of Cannery Row and Hoffman Avenue, the Monterey County Health Department announced July 27.
The City of Monterey reported the spill to the department's Environmental Health Bureau, prompting the closure.
The health department warned in a statement that anyone who makes contact with the water in that area could develop gastroenteritis or other water borne illnesses.
Which is scientific-speak for saying diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and other unpleasant symptoms.
The beach will remain closed until samples show the water is safe for human contact according to state guidelines, the statement said.
UPDATE: The health department announced July 31 that the closure order has been lifted. Water samples taken on July 28 showed that bacteria levels were within those considered safe for recreational contact.
