Evacuation warnings have been issued for two zones in Big Sur—MRY-F026 and MRY-F027—which includes such spots as Deetjens, Nepenthe, Post Ranch Inn and Ventana Big Sur, as a result of the Timber Fire, mapped at 376.4 aces by Cal Fire at 4:30pm, Sunday, Aug. 9.
The incident began as a small vegetation fire in a remote location with a slow rate of spread on Saturday, Aug. 8. By around 10:30am, Sunday the fire had grown to 100 acres, jumping to 180 acres by noon.
Crews from Cal Fire, Big Sur Hand Brigade, incarceration crews and U.S. Forest Service are all on scene. Air support is also working to stop the fire's progress. It was listed at 20 percent contained.
Described by Cal Fire as southeast of Loma Vista, the mountainous location miles inland is difficult to access, making it hard for fire fighters and equipment to access it. The cause of the fire is unknown.
UPDATE: At approximately 7:15pm Sunday, the fire is now mapped at 400 acres and is burning in steep, rugged terrain with heavy fuels, according to the U.S. Forest Service - Los Padres National Forest officials. Containment efforts are hampered by poor access conditions.
Crews on the ground and in the air are encountering increased fire behavior and spotting of fire.
The evacuation warnings were at Level 2, which means people in those zones need to "Get Set" and be ready to leave at a moment's notice.
