Evacuation warnings in Monterey and Moss Landing harbors have been lifted less than 24 hours after an earthquake off the coast of Petropavlovsk Kamchatka in Russia prompted widespread tsunami advisories throughout the Pacific.
Officials issued evacuation warnings to boat dwellers in Moss Landing Harbor and Monterey Harbor, on Tuesday night, July 29. Those warnings were never upgraded to orders.
On Wednesday at 11:14am, the National Weather Service canceled a tsunami advisory issued on Tuesday for the entire California coast.
Beach access points in Monterey County were reopening as of about noon on Wednesday, but Weather Service officials encourage people to continue to use caution as water levels may fluctuate more than usual and currents may continue to be strong. As a result, a beach hazard advisory remains in effect through Wednesday night, July 30.
There were no immediate reports of damage in either local harbor, officials say.
