It has been confirmed that a gunman killed at least seven people and wounded about 20 more at a community college in Oregon this morning.
This shooting is one of over 40 school shootings this year, according to the New York Times, which also reports the suspected gunman is in custody.
Just three days ago, students at Hartnell College could have been exposed to a similar tragedy, but thanks to a swift investigation by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and a concerned family member, a possible mass shooting was averted at the campus.
According to a press release sent out by the Sheriff's Office, a 56-year-old student at Hartnell left a threatening voicemail to a family member and mentioned shooting the college.
The concerned family member called authorities, who later conducted a welfare check on Cary Palmer. Upon determining he might be a threat to others, deputies seized a stock of firearms at his residence, including two high-powered rifles with attached scopes.
Palmer was put on a hold to be evaluated.
