Like many vehicles from the era, Jae Friend’s 1984 Toyota Corolla doesn’t have air conditioning.
On the drive to Seaside from Marin, Friend says he felt bad that his wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was mostly in the heat of the sun for the entire trip. So, Friend drove alongside big rigs for chunks of the journey, taking advantage of the shade their trailers were casting, hoping to cool down the inside of his car.
An oasis was awaiting them in Seaside—cool, breezy and cloudy, making the trek to show the Corolla all worth it.
Friend’s Corolla was among dozens of vehicles from the 1980s and ’90s during RADwood, a national car show that was part of the first-ever The Paddock Monterey at the Bayonet Black Horse golf course in Seaside on Friday, Aug. 15.
Iconic cars from four decades ago were on display, including a DeLorean, Mazda RX-7, Pontiac Fiero GT, Fox Body Ford Mustangs and plenty other bodacious rides.
Friend says he got his Corolla 25 years ago, and has been customizing it ever since. But now, it’s finished.
“I’ve been playing with it for 25 years,” he says. “It’s time to enjoy it.”
That enjoyment extended to others attending the event. As a group of children walked by, Friend reached inside the car’s window and flipped on the pop-up headlights, which rotated up and down much to the delight of the youngsters—witnessing a vehicle feature that was once all the rage in the automotive world long before they were born.
Other vehicle displays included those by Saleen, Spyker and more, as well as an Aston Martin DB5 that pays tribute to the James Bond films with functional gadgets.
The Paddock Monterey is the sister event of Concorso Italiano, slated for the same venue on Saturday, Aug. 16.
