High winds and waves breaking at up to 25-35 feet predicted for Sunday, Feb. 4, prompted the Monterey County Sheriff and other agencies to issue warnings and urge the public to stay away from beaches and bluffs along the coastline at least until Monday.
The National Weather Service warned that unexpected waves could sweep people away from rocks, jetties and beaches. Dangerous rip currents are also expected.
A high wind warning will go into effect at 10pm Saturday, Feb. 3, and lasts until 10pm Sunday, Feb. 4 with winds 20-30 miles per hour and gusts of up to 60mph. The warning covers most of Monterey County. The Santa Lucia Range could see gusts of up to 80mph at the highest peaks. Widespread power outages are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
At the end of the third day of play at Pebble Beach during the AT&T Pro-Am, tournament officials announced that "out of an abundance of caution" the gates would be closed to spectators and volunteers on Sunday.
"Should play be carried over to Monday, Feb. 5, further details about spectator access will be communicated in due course," the tournament announced.
