Bill Harvey

A Salinas Union High School District bus driver was arrested March 9 for alleged rape against at least two special needs students who were entrusted to his care, the Salinas Police Department announced.

Bill Harvey, 58, of Seaside, was booked into Monterey County Jail and charged with rape of a person unable to give consent, rape by force or fear, lewd act upon a child and kidnapping and stalking.

Police said in a March 16 press release that they believe Harvey had "inappropriate relationships" with at least two physically and developmentally disabled children who rode on his bus over the last decade.

There is evidence he bought gifts and met with at least one of the victims several times outside of work.

The two victims told police he touched them inappropriately several times and were forced to commit sexual acts against their will.

The first act occurred eight years ago, when one of the victims was 13, and police said the acts continued as recently as late last year.

The investigation began after someone called Salinas Police on Feb. 22 to complain of a man harassing a female.

SUHSD officials are cooperating with detectives, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to Monterey County Superior Court records, Harvey entered a plea of not guilty on March 13.

He remains in custody in the Monterey County Jail, awaiting his next court appearance on March 28 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
