As of 11am Saturday morning, the Soberanes Fire had burned 1,800 acres and was at 0-percent containment, according to Cal Fire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn.

The fire started just a little more than 24 hours ago, at about 8:45am Friday morning, in Soberanes Canyon in Garrapata State Park. The fire spread mostly to the east and south throughout the day and overnight.

Friday night, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office ordered residents to evacuate from the Palo Colorado and Garrapata Ridge areas. About 1,000 structures are threatened. Firefighters spent part of the night building fire breaks to protect homes. There are more than 300 fire crews from all over California on the scene.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter for evacuees at Carmel Middle School on Carmel Valley Road.

Boy scouts at the Pico Blanco Camp remained at camp Friday night, and evacuated Saturday morning. The boy scouts headed out of camp to Carmel by bus this morning.

Highway 1 remains open in both directions and Big Sur businesses are open. Roads in the immediate area of the fire are closed, including Weston Ridge Road and Palo Colorado Road.

More than 300 fire crews from all over California are on the scene.
