Less than nine months ago, Carmel's former city administrator, Chip Rerig, retired and left for Italy with his wife and high school daughter so she could attend school there. Rerig and his family are now back and he's on tap to become the interim city manager for the City of Pacific Grove starting Monday, Aug. 24.

"Great to work in and for my hometown!" Rerig says by text. He and his family are longtime P.G. residents. He worked for Carmel for nearly 10 years.

P.G.'s current city manager, Matt Mogensen, announced in July that he was taking the job as city manager of Marina, replacing the retiring Layne Long. Mogensen served under Long as assistant city manager in Marina before taking the job in P.G. His last day is Friday, Aug. 21.

Rerig says he was approached by the P.G. City Council recruitment subcommittee of P.G. Mayor Nick Smith and Councilmember Cynthia Garfield asking if he'd be interested in the interim job.

"I'm honored and enthusiastic," he says.

The contract to engage his services goes before the rest of the Council on Wednesday, Aug. 19. He will be paid $128 per hour, based on an annualized salary of $266,468.

As a "retired annuitant" under the California Public Employees' Retirement System, or CalPERS, Rerig may only work 960 hours per fiscal year, which comes out to $122,880.

The Council meeting begins at 6pm on Wednesday, inside City Hall at 300 Forest Ave. The agenda is available here. To participate on Zoom use cityofpacificgrove.org/Zoom_CC, or watch on the city's YouTube channel
