P.G. announces city manager's last day and promises a nationwide search to replace him.

Pacific Grove City Manager Matt Mogensen began his night giving a presentation to the P.G. City Council during a special meeting on Tuesday, July 7, and ended it just 11 miles to the north, when the Marina City Council voted unanimously to hire him as their city manager, replacing the retiring Layne Long.

The next day, Wednesday, July 8, P.G. officials announced that Mogensen's last day will be Aug. 21. He took over as the city manager in 2024, after having worked as assistant city manager of Marina for six years.

"Serving Pacific Grove has been an honor," Mogensen said in a press release. "I am grateful to the City Council, staff and the many residents who have made my time here so rewarding. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of this community. I leave knowing the city is in good hands and has a bright future ahead."

Mogensen was cited as having worked with the P.G. Council and staff to strengthen the city's fiscal sustainability, as well as advance several priority projects, including the new Kimpton Mirador hotel, rebuilding the staff and improving downtown maintenance.

"Matt has served Pacific Grove with integrity and professionalism," said Mayor Nick Smith. "We appreciate his contributions to the organization and we wish him every success as he returns to Marina."

There was no timeline given for replacing Mogensen. The Council will consider next steps for launching a nationwide search at a future meeting and will also consider interim leadership arrangements.
