The long-delayed draft environmental impact report (EIR) for Monterey Downs, the 550-acre mega-project proposed for the former Fort Ord, was expected to be made public last Monday, Nov. 24.
Not surprisingly, it's delayed.
"You don't want to read it over Thanksgiving," jokes Teri Wissler Adam, the city of Seaside's contract project manager.
The draft EIR was first scheduled to be released in October 2013. But the RBF Consulting team originally handling Monterey Downs, and working in Monterey, left the company at the beginning of the year, Wissler Adams says. A new team had to be brought up to speed to take over.
The target draft EIR release date was moved to late summer 2014. Since then, it has been pushed back repeatedly.
Wissler Adams says the project's "specific plan," the document outlining the Monterey Downs planning and implementation, was finally ready Nov. 24. The draft EIR has to be updated to reflect the latest changes to the specific plan.
When the draft EIR is finally released, Wissler Adams adds, the public can find hard copies at the City’s Planning Counter, the Seaside library and the Oldemeyer Center. An electronic version will be posted to the city’s website.
A public workshop on Monterey Downs is still scheduled for 7pm Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Oldemeyer Center, 968 Hilby Ave., Seaside. It's hosted by LandWatch Monterey County and Sustainable Seaside.
