Monterey County received a $9.7 million federal grant from the Defense Community Infrastructure Program to improve Jolon Road, the only road connecting to the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett. The improvements span 8.7 miles from Mission Road South to Bradley Lockwood Road.
Securing federal funds for Monterey County District 3 was a collaborative effort.
“I am thrilled to see that this grant was secured and that Jolon Road will be getting necessary safety improvements,” said U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, in a Sept. 22 press release.
“It’s fantastic news for the Monterey County residents that regularly drive this narrow road, especially our brave troops at Fort Hunter Liggett that rely on it," she said.
Jolon Road is a 39-mile road built in the 1940s located in a rural area outside of King City. It has two lanes with little to no shoulders and is in disrepair. Locals and military personnel use it to connect with U.S. Highway 101 in King City and Bradley.
The goal is to improve the road for safety reasons and ensure military installation readiness at the camp.
“Jolon Road is the sole gateway and vital lifeline for everyone who lives, works, and trains at Fort Hunter Liggett," said Col. Jason McKenzie, Fort Hunter Liggett Commander, noting it would improve the camp’s combat readiness.
“Our rural roads matter, and the people who rely on them every day deserve safe, reliable infrastructure," Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez said. “This is what partnership looks like, and I am excited to see these dollars put to work in our community."
