CDFW San Juan Road Pajaro

Officers with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are shown stationed on San Juan Road in Pajaro, where a search into a suspected illegal cannabis farm was taking place.

Dozens of law enforcement officers descended onto greenhouse facilities in Pajaro the morning of Wednesday, July 16, serving a search warrant on a suspected illegal cannabis growing operation.

The operation on the 1400 block of San Juan Road snarled traffic and drew dozens of onlookers, as rumors spread on social media that a raid by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents was taking place.

That was not the case, an official with the state Department of Cannabis Control confirmed. It was also noted by the Solidarity Network, a group of volunteer observers who monitor immigration enforcement activities in Monterey County.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department headed up the investigation, but did not release further details. A spokesperson with the Department of Cannabis Control says more information about the operation would be released soon, but declined to comment further, citing the active investigation.

A spokesperson with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office says the agency was not involved in the operation, and directed questions to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.
