Its been a year since a team of law enforcement officers swept through King City in the early morning hours, arresting seven people, including five members of the police department, the retired chief, and the acting chief's brother.
Two of those cops have since reach plea deals with prosecutors. Former officer Jaime Andrade agreed to a plea deal today, pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of unlawful storage of a firearm.
Andrade was originally charged with two crimes in February 2014 in connection to firearms.
One charge was for possession of an unregistered assault weapon; under California law, even police officers are not allowed to own their own assault weapons.
The negligent storage charge stems from Andrade's 17-year-old stepson accessing Andrade's weapon in their Soledad home. On July 24, 2013, the stepson was detained in Salinas following a traffic stop, and was arrested for concealing and carrying Andrade’s weapon.
Prosecutors offered a plea deal for those charges, giving Andrade the opportunity to plead guilty to two misdemeanors.
Andrade rejected the offer, and both sides were preparing to go to trial.
As prosecutors investigated to prepare for a trail, they found evidence that Andrade had possessed a second unregistered assault weapon two years earlier.
Andrade had not yet appeared in court on charges for illegal possession of that second assault weapon, but the DA will dismiss charges in exchange for a plea deal reached Friday morning.
Andrade agreed to pay penalty of $300 for each unregistered assault weapon, and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of negligent storage of a firearm.
The court ordered destruction of the unregistered assault weapon.
Andrade faces up to a year in jail, and will be sentenced on April 10.
