He was a police officer, and the one who was supposed to keep safe the dues paid by other cops into their association.
Instead, former Greenfield Police Officer Arnulfo Trevino dipped into the funds of the Greenfield Police Officers' Association to the tune of $31,318 over four years while serving as its president, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
His fellow officers found out about the embezzlement in October 2017 when they learned that their association's account with a statewide police organization was past due, making them ineligible for important benefits.
They confronted Trevino, who admitted that he had been financially struggling and had used the money for his own purchases. (The website Transparent California lists Trevino's total pay and benefits for 2016 at $133,813.)
An investigation by a district attorney investigator revealed the extent of the embezzled funds.
Trevino presented proof to the judge that he'd paid back the stolen money as restitution, and on Dec. 28, pleaded guilty.
On Jan. 31, Monterey County Superior Court Robert A. Burlison sentenced Trevino to three years of felony probation and 90 days of jail.
