The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesdsay, July 23, that the agency reached an agreement July 17 with Vistra Corp. regarding the removal and disposal of lithium-ion batteries damaged by the Jan. 16 fire at Vistra's Moss 300 battery energy storage system in Moss Landing.
The agency also announced the launch of a webpage that will allow the public to access documents related to the cleanup and track the cleanup's progress in the months ahead. Already, it's filled with information and links regarding the cleanup and which agencies are responsible for what.
No timeline has been given for how long the cleanup will take, as the scale and level of complexity of the cleanup operation is without precedent, as the remaining batteries are volatile. A risk of re-ignition will remain throughout at least the earlier stages cleanup.
A private firefighting company, paid and overseen by Vistra, will remain onsite 24/7 during the cleanup to respond to any incidents and assist local firefighters in the event of a flareup.
