The interim president of CSU Monterey Bay has been made permanent president of the university after nearly a year of service.
Dr. Eduardo Ochoa, who has held the interim position since 2012, was appointed president this morning by the California State University Board of Trustees, according to the university.
“I am honored by the action taken by the Board of Trustees in making permanent my appointment,” Ochoa said in a written statement. “I believe this university is poised for great things, and I look forward to continuing to serve as its president.”
Ochoa, born in Argentina, has had a distinguished and varied career, serving from 2010 to 2012 as U.S. assistant secretary for postsecondary education in the Obama administration.
Previously he taught at Fresno State and CSU Los Angeles, where he was chair of the economics and statisics department. He also led the university’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research, and was acting dean of its business school.
He has been dean of Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Business Administration, and provost and vice president for academic affairs at Sonoma State University.
Ochoa has degrees in physics, nuclear science, and economics, from Reed College, Columbia University, and the New School for Social Research.
