As part of a five-year pilot project, Caltrans District 5 has installed nine adaptive traffic signals along Highway 68 between Salinas and Monterey. Adaptive traffic signals use artificial intelligence paired with sensors to adjust to traffic patterns in real time.
The Adaptive Traffic Signal Control lights were scheduled to go live on Monday, May 4, following months of field testing and will cover a span between San Benancio Road and Josselyn Canyon Road.
In March 2025, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s board of directors voted to pursue the 5-year Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Pilot Project.
In a statement, Caltrans District 5 said it “is excited to take a lead role in implementing this innovative pilot project in partnership with TAMC staff.”
According to the statement, the Caltrans team will share analysis of the system with TAMC’s board of directors and provide the organization with regular updates over the course of the project’s lifespan.
