For weeks, Del Rey Oaks Mayor Jerry Edelen has been effusive in his praise of the applicants his city has been considering for interim city manager.
The position been open since Jan. 3, when City Council accepted former city manager Daniel Dawson's resignation, but rejected Dawson's proposal to stay on until August.
Monday night, after Del Rey Oaks City Council met in closed session, it was announced that Dino Pick, currently Monterey's deputy city manager of plans and public works, and a former commandant of the Defense Language Institute, has been selected for the position.
Pick says he looks forward to helping get Del Rey Oaks back on track amid the personnel shakeup—and scandalous allegations—that have recently rocked the small city.
"I'm very excited to be working for a mayor and council that have a clear vision, and I’m really looking forward joining the team and serving a wonderful community," he says.
"Frankly, the interaction I’ve had with [Edelen] and the council in the interviewing process is part of the reason why I’m excited," he adds.
Pick says he will work to create an atmosphere of collaborative government that’s responsive to the residents.
Pick began working for the city of Monterey in April 2014, and says he told Monterey City Manager Mike McCarthy that he'd been offered the Del Rey Oaks position and that they have discussed a transition plan.
"We have a strong team in the Department of Plans and Public Works, and I’m confident that in the next two weeks, we will transition all responsibilities and all duties in a responsible way," Pick says.
Pick starts as Del Rey Oaks interim city manager on March 27.
