It's not Halloween yet, but black will be the color du jour at CSUMB tomorrow, as faculty members are planning to dress like they're going to a funeral.
And in a sense, they are: From noon to 1pm a "memorial service" will be held at the library roundabout, where faculty will "mourn" the loss of their collective bargaining agreement that will have expired exactly 100 days ago come tomorrow. There is still no agreement for the terms of a new one.
In a statement sent out by the faculty, the service is part of a statewide "Day of Action" at Cal State schools called for by the California Faculty Association, the faculty's union. A central complaint from the CFA is a lack of salary increases at all 23 campuses for the last seven years.
"At CSUMB, the salary item had a particular significance since the campus maintains low salaries and disproportionately low wages for faculty in comparison with other campuses," the statement reads.
Additionally, faculty are upset about the lack of fair workload and limited shared governance.
After the memorial, there will a procession to Building One, which houses the office of CSUMB President Eduardo Ochoa. Several faculty members have signed a letter to Ochoa urging him to support a new contract that boosts faculty compensation.
