Rain in recent weeks has changed the work being done on Carmel Valley Road and is expected to cause delays.
Stage 3 of the roundabout construction at Laureles Grade and Carmel Valley Road has been pushed from Jan. 9 to Jan. 20 and will take place from 6:30am-3pm.
“Due to weather we’ve had recently, the contractor has to rework the site with the water and let it dry out before they can pave it,” says Kyle Oyama, the County’s project manager.
This is the third of five stages for the project and is expected to cause traffic delays of 30 minutes or more, particularly during morning and afternoon commute hours.
Stage 2 of construction was completed in early December. The roundabout will replace the existing one-way, stop-controlled “T” intersection of Carmel Valley Road and Laureles Grade, one of the main arteries connecting drivers from Carmel Valley to Highway 1 and to Highway 68 to the north.
Construction-related delays may overlap with delays related to repairs near milepost 13.8 on Carmel Valley Road. Due to heavy rains, a section of Carmel Valley Road a half-mile past Via los Tulares has been partially washed out. The eastbound lane is closed to traffic, but the westbound lane is stable.
Public Works staff are managing the repair, anticipated to take three to six weeks to complete. Flaggers will be onsite to control one-lane traffic using the stable travel lane until a temporary traffic signal is installed.
Travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
Due to inclement weather the first week of January, a section of Carmel Valley Road near milepost 13.8 has been partially washed out and is damaged.
